Arthur James "Big Jay" Callahan (born November 2nd, 1963) is an American politician currently serving as the representative for Washington's 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. A former educator, Callahan was previously a high school instructor and as well as a vice principal. He later served a two-year stint on the county board of education, and four years as the Superintendent of Schools. Though Callahan initially had no immediate national ambitions, local Democratic operatives urged Callahan to make a run for Congress following the retirement of Norm Dicks. Callahan seized this opportunity and won with a comfortable margin of victory, in part thanks due to the momentum of President Obama's reelection victory and the rise of libertarianism which had split the conservative vote. He went on to win reelection in both 2014 and 2016. Though Callahan's national rise to prominence has been slow, he has been recently named by pundits as a possible choice to replace Maria Cantwell in the Senate, though has since declared his intent to support her candidacy should she run for reelection. Still, in a post-2016 world, there is a unmistakable void in leadership without President Obama, and a unifying voice will be needed to bring both the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party back together to face a fully-Republican America in the coming months.
