Republican Congressman from South Carolina

JACKSON, Joseph Percival (b. September 7, 1737 in Charleston, South Carolina) is the Republican Congressman from South Carolina, a former Patriot Soldier and General in the Continental Army, and plantation owner. He is married to Joanne Jackson (née Camden) and the couple have four children: Robert, Arthur, Claire, and Fillmore III. He was elected to serve as Congressman in 1790. He also served in his state legislature, a post from which he resigned upon being elected to federal office, and currently as chief of the militia in South Carolina from the end of the Revolutionary War. He is a member of the Republican Party and a strict anti-federalist, as he was before the ratification of the constitution, and he is a member of the Anglican Church. 

 

History of the Jackson Family in the United States

-- Fillmore JACKSON I (b. 1593, d. 1655) - Made a Lord Proprietor of the Province of Carolina, given land in what is now South Carolina, moved family to the new colony (one of the only Lords Proprietor to do so), founded an indigo plantation, a cotton plantation, and began construction of a harbor. Also funded the construction of several tenant farms in upstate South Carolina.

-- Jeremiah JACKSON (b. 1619, d. 1677) - Continued his father's legacy of developing agriculture, inherited the indigo and cotton plantations as well as harbour, allowed his sons to farm the tenant farms as children in order to prepare them for adulthood, founded a school in South Carolina for the children.

-- Fillmore JACKSON II (b. 1652, d.1711) - The family's Harbour was sold.

-- Peter JACKSON (b. 1680, d. 1768) - During his life, Carolina was made a Crown Colony and then a full Colony. Jackson was a part of the early governments of Carolina and then of South Carolina.

-- Franklin JACKSON (b.1705) - Served in Legislature of South Carolina, continued to oversee operations of Indigo and Cotton Plantations. Supported revolution.
