The Office of Representative Anthony Fernandez

For Immediate Release

Representative Anthony Fernandez (R-TX) and Representative Johnathon Grant (R-MO) co-authored and introduced pro-life legislation to the House of Representatives today. The bill, titled the Grant-Fernandez Federal Funding for Abortion Act, aims to defund Planned Parenthood and every other abortion-providing organization. Both Representatives gave statements:

Mr. Grant, a Republican of Missouri, said:

"This is not only a pro-life bill, this is a limited government bill. The government has no legitimate purpose to fund these murder barns against the wishes of millions upon millions of US taxpayers. This is a victory for the people of this country who truly don't want to be involved in the murder of their fellow human beings. Conservatives, libertarians, and moderates can all agree that we shouldn't be forced to fund something we find so abhorrent, something so unnecessary and irrelevant to the function of government. This is a bill for the moral American taxpayer, the ones who don't want to be involved in the gruesome murder and dismemberment of the most vulnerable of our kind."

Mr. Fernandez, a Republican from Texas, said:

"As Ronald Reagan once said, 'Abortion is advocated only by persons who have themselves been born.' Keeping that in mind, we must be the voice for those who cannot speak. But, let us recognize this bill for what it is. This bill does not address the legality of abortion, this bill addresses the will of the people. There is no reason for the government to fund abortion providers when only 25% of Americans fully support abortion according to The Pew Research Center in 2018. It is morally wrong, and I would even dare to say that it is a violation of our freedom of religion to force the American tax payer to support such immoral atrocities against their will. This ought to be a bi-partisan bill. There should be no reason to negate the bill if you truly have the will of the people in mind. It is abusive for the government to use such funds to fuel organizations that perform over one million abortions every single year. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the US, received a total of one point five billion dollars in federal money between fiscal years 2013-2015. Let me repeat that, one point five BILLION, and that still excludes other abortion providers in the nation. It's not hard to see why Democrats want to keep it that way since Planned Parenthood pours back millions of dollars into the Democratic Party. We must realize that money is fungible, by giving federal funds to these organizations we allow them to redirect funds for the purpose of abortions. If you're worried about STD tests, pregnancy tests, or any other regular clinical offers, the government could subsidize that. Conservatives, Libertarians, and Moderates would all much rather see one point five billion dollars in federal money go to clinics that don't offer or support abortion than to places such as Planned Parenthood."
