    Thank you for your question. You know, I don't think blind political attacks are beneficial for either side. We saw where that got our current President. Look, I respect Governor Sharp -- but he and I have a few key disagreements. I wasn't it wholesome agreement about his decision to protect confederate monuments. Look, I value Southern History as much as the next guy, but I think the monuments are much better protected in the museums than on the streets. My main concern with Governor Sharp is his hastiness on running for President after winning the Governorship, I think the Southeast needs a Governor that sticks around home! But I hope I can work with Governor Sharp in the future on making improvements in the region.

    " Well, only on the condition that I lose my mind! Just kidding, I've had a lot of people approach me to run for higher office. I'm honestly considering it, but my main priority will be to ensure that common-sense Democrats do well across the country and we pass some important legislation that'll bring relief to the many Americans struggling right now. I will be exploring the possibilities of running for Governor or Senator within the coming months, but it is not a major priority of mine right now. My main commitment is to the people of North Carolina's 11th district and I would take a decision to run for higher office very seriously, because it's a lot like my Pops used to say, "there is nothing worse than blind ambition."

    Proud to be back in Brevard, NC to host a town hall with my constituents!
  4. Good evening Brevard! It is great to be here back home in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. I've been fighting hard for you in Washington, DC. While I know we ain't agreeing on everything, I will say that I've been trying my darndest on achieving bipartisanship reform in Washington, DC. I've committed myself not as a servant for the Democratic or Republican Party, but for the people of North Carolina. Since being in Washington, I have stood alongside several representatives in bringing common sense legislation to the table. I'm hear tonight because I want to address some of the questions you may have about my tenure, my goals, and the future of this great country. Please feel free to ask questions!

    Fresh Start Educational Attainment Act

    Mr. Speaker, Without breaking the motion for UC, I wanted to say some brief comments on this bill. This is an excellent bill that takes the right approach on reforming society from the negative implications of our criminal justice system. I wholeheartedly support this bill. I yield

    @Rufus

    I will be supporting the Social Media Anti-Censorship Act on the condition that my amendment is accepted.
  7. From the Desk of Congressman Rufus Goodwin In an example of common-sense bipartisanship, Congressman Rufus Goodwin stood on the House floor to announce his support for the Social Media Anti-Censorship Act. The bill would place restrictions on big tech and social media's censorship practices. Congressman Goodwin states, "this bill is a good attempt at controlling the out-of-control, all-invasive, big tech and social media companies that have attempted to impose their moral codes on political speech. The bill contains reasonable exemptions for firms to handle obscene and violent content. I do believe the fines set forth in the bill are set too high and I consequently introduced an amendment that reduced the fine imposed on businesses that violate the act. The main reasoning for introducing this amendment is that start-up social media sites, which could serve as healthy competitors to big social media sites, may not be able to afford fines as a result of negligence in their start-up phase." Below are the statements Congressman Goodwin made on the house floor:

    Social Media Anti-Censorship Act

    Mr. Speaker, While I stood alongside other members of this body to denounce the hate groups that plague our democracy, I am also rising in support of this bill. While we must strive to fight against public tyranny, we must also work together to defeat private tyranny. Within the past several years, big technology companies have operated on ethically-questionable business models. With the growing power and influence big technology companies hold over our everyday lives, we need to embark on reasonable measures to ensure their power is limited. One of the most glaring abuses of power committed by these corporations is the recent efforts to restrict speech. I firmly believe that the internet should be a free platform for individuals from all walks of life to engage in discussion, view content, and learn. This bill sets reasonable restrictions on obscenities and illegal activities and it firmly stands against big technology and social media companies restricting speech that's not in-line with their moral codes. We must allow the internet to handle it's conflicts through community approaches and self-improvement. For some, the internet provides a platform for those that have been otherwise left out of the system. I plan on voting for this bill; however, I do believe that the fine is set to high. Therefore, I propose the following amendment: I yield
